Was Barack Right or Wrong?

May 29, 2023

“If you had to choose a moment in history to be born, and you did not know ahead of time who you would be - you didn’t know whether you were going to be born into a wealthy family or a poor family, what country you’d be born in, whether you were going to be a man or a woman - if you had to choose blindly what moment you’d want to be born, you’d choose now.” - Barack Obama, 2016

In his waning White House days, President Barack Obama helped curate the November 2016 issue of Wired magazine, in which he wrote an optimistic essay on why this is the best time ever to be alive.

And here we are six years later, asking the question: was Barack’s middle name Pollyanna, not Hussein? Now, I don’t have to list all the current world’s woes as a dystopian bookkeeper. You know what’s going on.

The real question is, what are we going to do about it? For those of you in the United States, voting is one of our collective rituals to press our face to the looking glass into the future and place our fingerprints on the leaders who, hopefully, will guide us to a better world. I hope y’all will vote this coming week as it’s one means (not the only one) to influence our community and our world.
