The NBA’s Modern Elder.

May 29, 2023

Andre Iguodala is a dapper dude. He’s a GQ model with EQ on the basketball court. He was also the MVP of the inaugural Golden State Warriors NBA Finals run in 2015 (4 championships in 8 years).

Now 38, Andre is trying to decide whether it’s time to retire. Like Silicon Valley engineers around the same age, Andre’s surrounded by young talent who are faster and a lot more flashy (non-starters on the Warriors have an average age of 22, and four players can’t legally drink yet in California).

Nonetheless, Andre has become almost the “player-mentor” of the Warriors. Coach Steve Kerr says that when it came to their most recent championship, “Andre was a big part of this with his guidance, leadership, and wisdom.” And, I might add, he did it all while only playing in a small fraction of the games.

How do we help more companies see the value of their modern elders in helping the young ones shine?

How does the term “wisdom worker” replace “knowledge worker” as the most valuable kind of employee you want on a team?
