Rise Up and Be Heard!

May 29, 2023

Am I an elder or elderly? This recent Wall Street Journal article amplified this question as the age of 60 became a new line of demarcation as high risk for COVID-19. I’m supposed to be thinking of Social Security at this age, but I’m feeling some serious Social Insecurity!

Elder refers to a person of a greater age. It is a relative term. Elderly refers to a person of old age. Long ago, my elder grandparents told me, “Children should be seen but not heard,” but this virus has created almost an “age apartheid” in which elders aren’t seen or heard.

I own the fact that I’m an elder, but I don’t believe I’m elderly. And, in this crisis, I hope you’ll raise your wise voices with me to look for sane solutions to this vexing global problem. I can’t create the vaccine nor figure out the way to prevent the world from going into an economic depression. But I can offer some emotional moderation to my family, some ways of giving back to my local Baja neighborhood, and some new means of connecting with my MEA alum community. What can you do?

Modern Elders! Rise up! Find your voice! Discover how you can best be heard!
